Films Featuring Workplace Harassment

1980 – 2019

I recently watched an old TV movie from 1980, Fun and Games, that deals directly with sexual harassment in the workplace. It is the first movie I could find that deals with the topic candidly. So I went on a quest to find more movies that address or highlight sexual harassment at work. Early movies from the 1980’s are made for TV movies, based on true stories. Over the last forty years, the subject of harassment has evolved, and more stories are being told. Here are 13 movies from 1980 through 2019 that feature sexual harassment in the workplace – to inspire, infuriate, entertain and educate.

Fun and Games

Fun and Games 1980

This ABC TV movie is the first movie about sexual harassment in the workplace before anyone had heard the term.

Showcasing quid-pro-quo harassment, it is about a factory worker promised a promotion, until she refuses the advances from her boss.

Fun and Games demonstrates how far we have come, and how far we still have to go.

9 to 5

9 to 5 Movie 1980

9 to 5 is acomedy, starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin

This movie is about office workers dealing with discrimination and sexual harassment, and the creative ways they manage a toxic boss and cutlure.

This classic is a great for when you need a laugh and to let off steam.

PG – Comedy – 1980

I Can Make You Love Me

Also called Stalking Laura, this CBS TV Movie is based on a true story about a women experiencing harassment that escalates to stalking and more. 

This movie provides a good example of how much work and risk is taken by the victim of harassment. Its also a good example of how toxic cultures can develop when a company dismisses accusations early, blame the victim, and allows harassment to escalate unchecked.

PG – Drama – 1993

Disclosure

This thriller flips the gender script as it uses sexual harassment in the workplace as a plot-counter-plot to demonstrate the horrors of corporate America.

There are discussions about the nature of harassment, power, access, and office politics as two high power executives struggle to keep their job.

Based on a book and true story by Michael Crichton.

R – Thriller – 1994

Hostile Advances: The Kerry Ellison Story

This made for TV movie, based on a true story about the landmark case Ellison v. Brady.

After experiencing sexual harassment and stalking, Kerry files a suit that sets the precedent for the  “reasonable woman” standard in sexual harassment cases, where the case will be examined from the point of view of the complainant, and not the defendant.

TV14 – Drama – 1996

North Country

North Country, inspired by a true story, about the women working in an mine, and dealing with sexual harassment, abuse, retaliation and assault from their male colleagues and their company.

Horrible Bosses

Horrible Bosses is a dark comedy about three friends who hate their jobs, due to their abusive bosses, and decide to take matters into their own hands.

There is a sequel, Horrible Bosses 2.

The Invisible War is a documentary unveiling the harsh reality of sexual assault in the US Military: an eye-opening, anger-inducing journey through the stories of our brave men and women in uniform.

Anita: Speaking Truth to Power is a documentary profiling Anita Hill, the attorney who testified to the sexual harassment she experienced while working for Clarence Thomas.

Clarence Thomas was the chairman of the EEOC before he was nominated to the Supreme Court.

Working Woman

Working Woman is an Israeli drama about a woman who juggles being a wife, a mother, and a new career.

Unfortunately she must deal with sexual harassment from her boss.

This film has a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes

The Assistant

Jane is a temp worker hoping to land a permanent job as an assistant to a film producer. Her boss is abusive and predatory.

While her colleagues are aware of their boss’s bad behavior, everyone chooses to look the other way.

R – Drama – 2019

Bombshell – 2019

This drama tells the true stories of some of the women who worked at Fox News, and experienced sexual harassment at the hands of CEO, Roger Ailes.

This movie exposes the pervasive culture of silence, isolation and vilification faced by these women.

Athlete A

Athlete A follows a reporter that uncovers the sexual assault of USA Gymnasts by Dr. Larry Nassar.

The willingness to gaslight and sacrafice the innocence and health of gymnasts in order to protect the doctor and the organization is infuriating.

The strength and courage of the victims is inspiring.
